Synopsis
Only one of the three spacecraft from an international mission survives, carrying the remaining five astronauts. After a dramatic and perilous mission on Jupiter’s moon Ganymede, they unexpectedly return to Earth’s orbit.
But since no one expects them anymore, they are not celebrated heroes. They land unnoticed on the Pacific coast of Mexico. A hopeless march through the desert begins and the crew, until then a functioning unit, falls apart. Aggressions build up, and a fight for life and death ensues.
Filmed on location in Canary Islands, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura at the film studios in Munich-Geiselgasteig.
Operation Ganymed was produced by Pentagramma (Renate Erler) in co-production with ZDF, ORF-Vienna, SRG-Zurich. Distribution by Fantasia, ImBild and world sales by Atlas International, Munich. Video distribution by Starlight Film, Bochum (video title includes “Heroes, Lost in the Dust of the Stars”).
Operation Ganymed received the “Goldenen Asteroid” for the best Science Fiction Film at the Trieste Film Festival and the “German Cinema Award” wertvoll.
