In order to compete with her husband, the famous molecular biologist Professor Dr. Dr. Dr. Leo Kaminski, the genetic engineer Lydia Kaminski-Smith develops a new type of microorganism that is supposed to decompose our gigantically growing garbage dumps: recycling bacteria!

An unforeseen mishap, however, releases precisely those microbes that turn into sugar. The epidemic spreads worldwide at a rapid pace and creates a new era in the history of human culture, namely before and after the sugar phenomenon.

For the voracious, prolific cellulose killers have no respect for library holdings, nor for paper money, nor for school notebooks, tax office files, toilet paper or newspapers. Telegrams and love letters can soon only be transmitted orally by postmen.

“Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, sugar to sugar….” murmurs Amanda, the secret lover, at the open grave of the professor who was held responsible for his spiteful wide’s carelessness, finally killed her and himself as an end to this spectacular life.
